About Me

I’m a dedicated Consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon with a strong foundation in General Surgery. My career in medicine has been driven by a deep passion for patient care, innovation, and education. I take great pride in advancing surgical techniques and making a meaningful impact in both clinical practice and medical training.

Education

My medical journey began with the completion of my Medical Doctor (MD) degree at Trakia University, Medical Faculty, Bulgaria, in 2003. Eager to deepen my expertise, I specialised in General Surgery and completed my training at the same institution in 2010. My passion for research and innovation led me to pursue a PhD in General Surgery, which I was awarded in 2013. My doctoral thesis focused on regulatory cytokines in colorectal cancer development, contributing valuable insights to the field of oncology.​Beyond clinical practice, I have always been committed to education and professional development. In 2008, I completed a Master’s in Medical Education (MSc) at Trakia University, equipping me with the skills to teach and mentor future medical professionals. In 2020, I was honoured to receive the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in England—a recognition of my dedication to surgical excellence and continuous learning.

Professional Experience

My career has encompassed a range of esteemed institutions and roles, blending academic teaching with hands-on clinical expertise. Since 2017, I have had the privilege of serving as an Associate Professor of General Surgery at the Medical Faculty of Trakia University, where I teach, guide, and mentor fourth-year UK medical students. From delivering lectures and preparing students for OSCEs to overseeing their end-of-module exams, I take great pride in shaping the next generation of doctors.

Within the NHS, I practise as a Consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon, alongside my private practice and academic commitments. My clinical responsibilities keep me actively engaged in patient care, including performing surgical procedures, leading outpatient clinics, and participating in Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings to develop personalised treatment plans.​I have been honoured to receive recognition for my contributions to healthcare, including the University College London Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre Staff Excellence Award in April 2017.

More recently, in 2023, my work on breast cancer recovery plans at the Bristol Breast Care Centre led to my nomination as a finalist for the HSJ Performance Recovery Award, reflecting my dedication to health management and improving patient pathways.​

Beyond the hospital setting, I extend my commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care through my private outpatient clinics. My approach prioritises thorough diagnostics, precise surgical planning, and tailored treatment strategies, ensuring that each patient receives an individualised plan suited to their needs. Clear communication is a cornerstone of my practice—I take great care to ensure that every patient fully understands their condition and treatment options.

Utilising the latest surgical techniques and evidence-based practices, my goal is always to achieve the best possible outcomes while minimising recovery time and complications. At the heart of my practice is a deep commitment to patient safety, comfort, and long-term well-being.

Expert in Dermatology, Hair Loss, and FUE Transplants

Dr Vernikos went on to become a specialist in hair transplantation. The technique employed by Dr Vernikos is Follicular Unit Extraction, commonly known as FUE. He has worked for several clinics at Harley Street in London, Manchester and Birmingham. He also worked as a Lοcum Consultant Dermatologist for various NHS trusts in England and since 2017 is working at the Dermatology Department of Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals (formerly St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospital NHS), where he gained a great experience in Clinical Dermatology and Skin Cancer treatments.

He is a member of the British Association of Dermatologists and also a member of European Academy of Dermatologists Venereologists. He is GMC fully registered with a licence to practice since the year 2000. Dr Vernikos is recognised as an expert in hair loss diagnosis- treatment, and hair transplant surgery. He has performed over 3500 FUE Hair Transplants over the last 20 years.

Specialist in Cardiology and Acute Medicine

She has been working as a private, non-invasive Cardiologist in a Harley Street clinic for 15 years, with a special interest in hypertension, heart failure, chest pain, sports cardiology, and cardiomyopathy. She has been accredited in echocardiography since 2015 Dr Iskreva also works as an NHS acute medical consultant.
